DOUGHERTY RESIDENCE
Colorado Springs, Colorado Fall 2008 - Summer 2009
PROJECT SCOPE: Architectural and structural engineering design, drafting and coordination of the new construction of a 4300 sq ft residence in El Paso County, Colorado - the residence incorporates full views of the Pike Peak mountain range and the eastern colorado plains 180 degrees away.
With the high front range summer temperatures, the design has utilized a passive solar scheme incorporating:
- Reflective southern exposing windows
- Cupola ventilation systems
- Proper over hangs to allow winter sun in and keep summer sun out minimize seasonal heat gain or loss.
- Erecting correctly-sized, latitude-specific overhangs and shading elements (shrubbery, trees, trellises, fences, shutters, etc.
- Orienting the building to face the equator.
- Extending the building dimension along the east /west axis.
- Adequately-sizing windows to face the midday sun in the winter, and be shaded in the summer.
- Minimizing windows on other sides, especially western windows
- Using thermal mass to store excess solar energy during the winter day which is then re-radiated during the night
